Port Phillip Bay, is a horsehead-shaped enclosed bay on the central coast of southern Victoria, Australia. The bay opens into the Bass Strait via a short, narrow channel known as The Rip, and is completely surrounded by localities of Victoria's two largest cities — metropolitan Greater Melbourne in the bay's main eastern portion north of the Mornington Peninsula, and the city of Greater Geelong in the much smaller western portion (known as the Corio Bay) north of the Bellarine Peninsula. Geographically, the bay covers 1,930 square kilometres  and the shore stretches roughly 264 km, with the volume of water around 25 cubic kilometres. Most of the bay is navigable, although it is extremely shallow for its size — the deepest portion is only 24 metres and half the bay is shallower than 8 m.

ABOUT THE TRIP

  • After leaving Melbourne the first stop is at Eastern Beach in Geelong. A beautiful spot with lot's of photo opportunities and toilets.
  • Second stop is at Point Lonsdale where there are breathtaking views of "The Rip" entrance to Port Phillip Bay, Lighthouse and an opportunity to enter a World War 2 coastal defense bunker.
  • Third stop is historic Queenscliff township where everyone can explore at their own pace.  Have lunch at one of the pubs, restaurants or takeaways, visit the Maritime Museum, Harbor district etc... Take a ride to the top of the observation tower for an unparalleled viewing experience! (free entry)
  • Then we go across the bay to Sorrento on board a Searoads all weather Ferry. Spectacular views with Dolphin sightings very common.
  • Once in Sorrento there's some time to explore the town before heading to spectacular Arthurs Seat 314m above sea level. Opportunity to take The Eagle cable gondola ride to the top of the mountain and descend in the bus stopping at a great lookout on the way down. (Note: You can also go up and down the mountain in the bus without taking the cable car.)
  • On the way back to Melbourne (if there's enough time) we'll be stopping at a certain coastal location with spectacular views towards the CBD,  West Gate Bridge and across the bay. Great photo opportunity!
